About

Hi! My name is Elena Vega, welcome to my blog! I am a 42 year old woman currently living in Cuba and about to move to the United States. I was born in Mexico City and I became an American by naturalization some years ago. I am journalist and so is my husband who for the last several years has been a correspondet in Cuba.

On March of 2013 I was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata, a disease that now I know is more common than what anyone could think. I have been through a lot of emotions and experiences while dealing with this mysterious disease and I decided to create a blog in order share those experiences and hopefuly help anyone that is going through a similar situation.

The disease has also force me to look at my life in a different way, to find ways to relax, since I now know that stress and anxiety is most likely the reason for the condition.

So, this is a dairy (although I do not write every day) about my hair and about my quest to recover. You are welcome to come in (even if you don’t have hair issues), read it and express your opinions. Thanks!

  1. It’s nice to have other people to talk about this with. I have been on and off antidepressants for the same reason for several years now. I’m 45 now and I don’t think I’ll ever get used to being bald and will never stop hoping for a cure. Jen

  2. Hey hon! I know it’s been 3 years since you wrote. I hope your hair situation is a bit better now. I lost 80% of my hair due to AA when i was 22. Mind you 22 with a gorgeous head of hair. I was broken and I feel for you. But guess what the hair did come back. Not on its own though. I tried a Chinese formula. This is not an infomercial. My name is aria and my email is ariaseth7@gmail.com. I started to see a naturopathic place at the time and it did nothing for me. The only thing that happened was that I got the name of a Chinese formula that I ate 6-8 pills a day for the next 2-3 years. I got at least 80% of my hair back. They started to grow even before they finished falling out and I’ll tell you, your family is right it doesn’t stop falling until you care and once you accept it, it grows back. As if that’s easy. Lol. Anyway the name of the medicine is Sheng fa wan. From a company called pine mountain. Check it out if you find it online. Good luck my darling. Hope these last few years were ok for you! Xo aria

    • Thanks so much Arianna!!! My hair is back! As you said… once I stopped obsessing about it, it just came back. But thanks so much for the tip… hopefully it would be helpful for others with the same problem.

      • Elena- Omg absolutely enjoying your blog, makes for a great read, and i am happy your hair has come back.
I am also currently writing a blog about my hunt for a cure, and would love to interview you, especially about hair loss from a Cuban perspective. It is only now, after i have returned home from my trip to Cuba that i have realised that Cubans are very advanced with hairloss treatments. Please respond if you are interested in being interviewed? My website is new and can be found at http://www.hairandnowglobal.com
